Where have I been? I suppose since I don’t do much retail shopping due to sticking within my budget, this story flew right under the radar.
Dots, the women’s fashion retailer, is selling off all of its clothing, furniture and fixtures as it liquidates about 360 stores nationwide. In addition to the headquarters that’s based in Glenwillow, OH., more than 3,000 workers will be unemployed.
“Dots, known for its affordable women’s fashion, has struggled against competition from both online retailers and other brick and mortar discount retailers that have greater resources and wider brand recognition,” Gordon Brothers said in a statement. “The retail chain has experienced trouble throughout the economic downturn with a significant decline in store traffic. Dots’ financial difficulties have been exacerbated by a number of largely unsuccessful changes in product pricing and marketing, as well as a burdensome lease portfolio.”
I visited a Dots discount retail that’s located in the Village Shopping Center of Gary, IN. and spoke with the manager. She informed me that the store will remain open until all the clothing items and fixtures were gone. There isn’t a definite date as to when the location will close its doors, but it’s evident by the signs posted that it will be soon.
Customers within the store were excited to hear the doors weren’t closing tomorrow as each of them browsed the clearance racks.
For those of you who reside in the area can recall the days when the Village Shopping Center was the place to go when you wanted to find an outfit, shoes, bank and eat or simply hang out during the weekend (as a teenager) in Gary. Now, the Village looks like a ghost town and with the closing of Dots, it’s “another one that bites the dust”.
